About this Flight

The first Innovation Class flight is to the 2014 TED conference, held for the first time in Vancouver B.C. This world-renowned gathering of “ideas worth spreading” has become the go-to event for those thinking differently.

Sharing ideas onboard this first flight are two guests at the top of their field. First, we have Eric Migicovsky, the founder and CEO of Pebble Technologies. Sitting beside him is James Patten, an interaction designer, inventor and visual artist who works at the crossroads where the digital world and the physical world meet.

With a background in system design engineering, Eric Migicovsky founded Pebble Technologies, the company behind the Pebble smartwatch. Pebble connects to your iPhone or Android and puts much of the technology of your phone, onto your wrist—liberating your hands to do other things than holding your phone.

Being a pioneer in "wearable tech," Eric's believes that technology should be unintrusive, well designed and should seamlessly integrate into your daily life - adding rather than distracting.

The idea for the Pebble came as Eric was biking around Amsterdam. He realized that during many activities the best place for necessary information is your wrist. Alongside a group of friends Eric started building their first smartwatch called InPulse, and in April 2012, Eric and his team launched their second version, Pebble.

Crowdfunded on Kickstarter
In 2013, Pebble launched a campaign on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Within two hours of going live the company's initial goal of $100,000 had been reached. After six days the project had become the most successful Kickstarter project in history, reaching over $4.7 million with 30 days still left in the campaign.

Eric Migicovsky on Sharing expand content

“As an entrepreneur, it’s dangerous to think that it’s not a good thing to share. If people become comfortable with sharing their projects and their goals, we will all accomplish them much faster.”
— Eric Migicovsky

Ready for TED expand content

“As a kid I wanted to be a mad scientist, and now I'm here sharing ideas with Eric, flying to TED.”

For the first Innovation Class flight, James Patten will take the empty seat next to Eric Migicovsky. James works to create new ways to visualize, understand and modulate digital information by using physical objects.

“I think Eric and I are interested in a lot of the same things... expand content

“...but we’re coming at it from two different angles. It’ll be really interesting to spend some time in the air together.”
